Repair Week is a celebration of repair throughout the UK, where we invite you to gain repair skills, fall back in love with your stuff and help save some money and the planet while you’re at it!
From a survey conducted in January 2025, it was found that half of people that live in Cardiff are worried about the cost of replacing broken items in the coming year. 53% of people would prefer to fix it themselves if they knew how, and 56% of people are interested in learning repair skills.
The most commonly discarded items were:
- Washing Machine (20%),
- Headphones (19%), and
- Sofas, chairs and benches (19%)
47% of people said they were repairing more and throwing away less because of increases in the cost of living.
Despite these concerns, the survey reveals a growing appetite for repair culture in the capital:
- 45%* of Cardiff respondents enjoy repairing items with others and want to learn more
- 45%* would attend more repair events if they were available locally
- 54%* report a sense of achievement from repairing things
- 52% would like to learn to repair something to reduce environmental impact
- 48% believe taking part in a repair workshop will make them feel more connected to their local community
On Saturday 8th March, we’ll be working with Repair Café Wales and Child Friendly Cardiff, to hold a special, textile focused Repair Café in St David’s Shopping Centre (outside H. Samuel) starting from 9:30am. If you bring your broken textiles, you’ll have the opportunity to sit with repairers, watch the repair and assist with it. The repairer will explain what is happening, so you have the chance to learn and pick up new practical skills.
